Biography

Producer, Director, Writer  Gary Marcuse

CBC Television Programming Executive (2004-2008):  Liaison for the CBC documentary unit in charge of regional development and local documentary production, CBC Vancouver. CBC Radio freelance writer, reporter and documentary producer.   Mr Marcuse created more than 100 hours of network documentaries for Ideas, Audience, Music and current affairs departments.

Independent production

Writer, director, producer for Face to Face Media: The Mind of a Child, (Gemini Canada Award), Nuclear Dynamite (Gemini, Beijing Golden Dragon, and 12 international awards),   ARKTIKA:  the Russian Dream that Failed.   

Director and writer for series television:  Champions of the Wild  (Great Sea Turtles, Jaguars and Siberian Tigers episodes) and The Search for Women Warriors for the series Ancient Clues for Omni Productions.     

Executive Producer  FIX: The Story of an Addicted City by Canada Wild Productions (Nettie Wild, Director).

Past National Chair, Documentary Organization of Canada,  Founding member, Vancouver Branch of the Documentary Organization of Canada.  Past  President and National Executive, Writer’s Guild of Canada.  

 

Producer: Betsy Carson

Betsy is an award-winning  producer/ EP/ director with over 20 years experience in documentary film and television. Recently released films include

·              Waking the Green Tiger  (producer) -  dir: Gary Marcuse- about the rise of an environmental movement in China;

·              Occupy Love (exec producer): director Velcrow Ripper’s doc on the Occupy movement;

·              Tracks Across Sand (producer), director Hugh Brody’s 14-year project with the ‡Khomani San of the Kalahari;

·              Surviving Progress, (exec  producer)  - dir: Mathieu Roy and Harold Crooks-  based on Ronald Wright’s book A Short History of Progress;

·              War in the Mind -  (producer) -  dir: Judy Jackson-  about post traumatic stress in the military and military suicide.

 

Currently in development:  Headwaters (producer);  a coproduction with the NFB: director Nettie Wild’s cinematic conversation with Northwestern British Columbia

 

Over the last four years she has also executive produced with Mark Achbar (The Corporation) three theatrical feature documentaries:  Fierce Light (dir: Velcrow Ripper) , Pax Americana (dir: Denis Delestrac) and Waterlife (dir: Kevin McMahon) and developed six additional documentary projects. The films she has collaborated on have won over 50 national and international awards and honours  including  Genie and Gemini awards,  American Film Institute, Berlin, Hot Docs and IDA awards, Chris, Prism, VIFF and others.

She has produced the feature docs of Nettie Wild  (FIX: The Story of an Addicted City, A Place Called Chiapas, Blockade,  Bevel Up), and has also worked with filmmakers Gary Marcuse (The Mind of a Child, Nuclear Dynamite, Arktika) and Hugh Brody  (The Meaning of Life, Time Immemorial).. The films she has collaborated on have won over 40 national and international awards and honours  including  Genie and Gemini awards,  American Film Institute, Berlin, Hot Docs, IDA, Prism and other humanities and environmental awards.

Betsy was a Vice Chair of the Documentary Organization of Canada for six years, leaving the Board of Directors in the fall of 2010, and continues to serve on DOC advocacy committees.
